Monsters Inc. itself is the name of a company that is engaged in producing energy. Energy in the city of Monstropolis all supplied by them. The trick is to scare the kids so they scream. Every time the kids screaming, terrified cries of the strength they will be converted into energy that is stored in special tubes. This work can not be taken by any person eh monsters, because monsters should scare the most ferocious monster. In addition, the monsters also believe that physical contact with humans can be toxic and dangerous. Among the rows of the scarer, the most popular is the James P. Sullivan, aka Sulley. Although originally he is a person who is kind and gentle, Sulley always fully committed in his work (read: very good at scaring the boy). One day, the incidents that occurred after work to make Sulley met a little girl. Little girl called Boo who then gets into the world of monsters. Almost all the elements in the movie Monsters Inc. has an original concept. I am impressed with how director Peter Docter able to incorporate the concept of small children's fairy tales and twisted it into something educational. Anyone who as children were not afraid in the dark because of the monster that awaits them? I remember as a child I always slept with the lights open for fear of a monster Dracula! This universal experience Monsters Inc. easy to draft acceptable to anyone. Pixar's ingenuity does not stop there, the concept of film as well as a tagline Monsters, Inc. "We Scare Because We Care" sounds catchy, is a clever play on words, thus opening great opportunities for the story.

Of course the original concept is worthless without good execution. Pixar merged with the original concept of the cliché story but still evocative. Friendship between Sulley and Boo becomes a central theme of the story because the two characters complement each other. Character Sulley modified by the innocence of Boo, Boo learned while fighting his fears with the help of Sulley. In addition to their relationship, there is also friendship between Sulley and Mike's coworkers. I personally do not like Mike because his character was too shallow (and too much doing comedy one-liner which unfortunately often less funny). Unfortunately before the termination of the film, Peter Docter seem too hasty, so the moment that has been built from the beginning to the last quarter to be less appropriate and too confusing because it merely changed its scene (watch yourself to understand what I mean.) Gone were kebrilianan Monsters Inc., which at the beginning of the movie even had time to slip the message 'saving energy' intelligently.

In terms of animation, Pixar also takes gambling (which fortunately) they won. Notice the feathers on a clear Sulley characters have a level of animation is more difficult than previous Pixar characters. The music is handled Randy Newman, who judged Pixar managed to make music in Toy Story. When the two films that Randy Newman's toys include a lot of country music, Monsters Inc. more tinged jazz.

I think because of the success of Monsters, Inc. Pixar Studios is growing pe-de and never again looked back. Pada tahun 2001, Studio film Pixar masih tengah berusaha membuktikan kapasitas mereka sebagai penghasil film-film 3D yang handal. Saat itu pasar 3D tidak lagi mereka dominasi sebagaimana tahun 1995 dulu. Perlahan tapi pasti kompetitor mulai muncul dan memantapkan diri. Pada musim panas tahun yang sama, Studio Dreamworks yang selama ini menjadi rival utama Pixar merilis film animasi Shrek yang mencapai kesuksesan luar biasa. Studio Pixar sendiri sebelumnya sudah merilis tiga film tetapi dua yang benar-benar dianggap sukses hanyalah duo Toy Story. Publik mulai bertanya-tanya, apakah memang benar studio ini hanya identik dengan duet Woody dan Buzz Lightyear? Monsters Inc menjadi jawaban Studio Pixar atas keraguan tersebut. Tidak hanya film ini sukses secara kualitas, ia juga menjadi film Pixar yang terlaris melebihi tiga film sebelumnya.

Apa selama ini kalian selalu ketakutan akan kloset kalian? Ketika kecil sering sekali anak-anak ketakutan karena membayangkan mengenai begitu banyaknya monster dan makhluk menyeramkan di dalam kloset tersebut. Toh orang tua sering mengatakan kalau itu semua hanya fantasi dan mimpi buruk belaka. Kalau menonton film ini, mungkin pendapat kalian akan berubah karena menurut film ini konon dunia monster dan dunia manusia sebenarnya eksis di dua dimensi yang terpisah. Jalan untuk masuk ke dalam dunia tersebut adalah melalui pintu-pintu dimensi.

Monsters Inc sendiri adalah nama perusahaan yang bergerak dalam bidang penghasil energi. Energi di kota Monstropolis semua disupply oleh mereka. Caranya adalah dengan menakut-nakuti anak-anak supaya mereka menjerit. Setiap kali anak-anak menjerit, kekuatan teriakan ketakutan mereka akan dikonversikan menjadi energi yang disimpan dalam tabung khusus. Pekerjaan ini tidak bisa diambil oleh sembarang orang eh monster, karena monster yang menakut-nakuti harus monster yang paling garang. Selain itu, para monster juga percaya bahwa kontak fisik dengan manusia bisa beracun dan berbahaya. Tidak heran kalau para monster yang menakut-nakuti (dipanggil sebagai scarer) menjadi primadona di kota Monstropolis.

Di antara deretan para scarer, yang paling ngetop adalah James P. Sullivan alias Sulley. Walau aslinya dia adalah sosok yang baik hati dan lemah lembut, Sulley selalu berkomitmen penuh dalam pekerjaannya (baca: sangat jago dalam menakut-nakuti bocah). Suatu hari, insiden yang terjadi sepulang kerja membuat Sulley bertemu dengan seorang anak gadis kecil. Anak gadis kecil yang kemudian dipanggil Boo ini masuk ke dunia para monster. Bisa dibayangkan bukan apa jadinya bila para monster kini gantian ketakutan oleh sang anak kecil? Apa saja kekisruhan yang bakalan terjadi?

Hampir semua unsur dalam film Monsters Inc memiliki konsep yang orisinil. Saya kagum dengan bagaimana sutradara Peter Docter mampu menggabungkan konsep dongeng kecil anak-anak dan memelintirnya menjadi sesuatu yang edukatif. Siapa yang sebagai anak-anak tidak takut dalam gelap karena adanya monster yang menanti mereka? Saya ingat ketika kecil saya selalu tidur dengan lampu terbuka karena takut ada monster Drakula! Pengalaman universal ini membuat konsep Monsters Inc gampang diterima siapapun. Kecerdikan Pixar tidak berhenti sampai di sana, konsep film yang sekaligus menjadi tagline Monsters Inc “We scare because we care” terdengar catchy, merupakan permainan kata yang pintar, sekaligus membuka peluang cerita yang besar.

Tentu saja konsep orisinil tidak ada gunanya tanpa eksekusi yang baik. Pixar meleburkan konsep yang orisinil tersebut dengan cerita yang klise tetapi tetap menggugah. Persahabatan antara Sulley dan Boo menjadi tema sentral cerita karena kedua karakter itu saling melengkapi. Karakter Sulley diubah oleh kepolosan Boo, sementara Boo belajar melawan ketakutannya dengan bantuan Sulley. Selain hubungan keduanya, ada juga persahabatan antara Sulley dan rekan kerjanya Mike. Saya pribadi kurang suka Mike karena karakternya terasa terlalu dangkal (dan terlalu banyak melakukan komedi one-liner yang sialnya sering kurang lucu). Sayangnya menjelang pengakhiran film, Peter Docter kelihatannya terlalu tergesa-gesa sehingga momen yang sudah dibangun dari awal hingga perempat terakhir jadi kurang greget dan terlalu memusingkan karena melulu berganti adegan (tonton sendiri untuk mengerti maksud saya). Hilang sudah kebrilianan Monsters Inc yang pada awal filmnya bahkan sempat menyelipkan pesan ‘hemat energi’ secara cerdas.

Dari segi animasinya, Pixar juga mengambil gambling (yang untungnya) mereka menangkan. Perhatikan bulu-bulu pada karakter Sulley yang jelas memiliki tingkat animasi lebih sulit daripada karakter-karakter Pixar sebelumnya. Musiknya ditangani Randy Newman yang dinilai Pixar berhasil membuat musik dalam Toy Story. Bila dalam dua film mainan itu Randy Newman banyak memasukkan musik country, Monsters Inc lebih banyak diwarnai musik jazz.

Saya rasa karena keberhasilan Monsters Inc inilah Studio Pixar kian pe-de dan tidak pernah lagi menengok ke belakang. Buktinya enam film yang mereka buat setelahnya selalu merupakan ide orisinil yang tidak pernah mengulang-ulang ide film mereka sebelumnya, sebuah trend yang baru akan dipatahkan dengan rilisnya film ketiga Toy Story tahun 2010 nanti.
