Hal tersebut mulai terkikis seiring dengan makin matangnya industri video game. Film-film dengan target untuk remaja dan orang dewasa seperti Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Hitman hingga Silent Hill muncul. Tahun ini, dari dunia game hadir Max Payne. Sebuah film yang diangkat dari game yang sempat menjadi hit beberapa tahun lalu. Bagaimana hasilnya?

Max Payne adalah sosok yang kehilangan jati dirinya begitu sebuah tragedi menimpanya. Kehilangan sosok istri dan anak menjadikan polisi muda yang bahagia ini berubah total. Ia menjadi pendiam, murung, dan mendedikasikan seluruh waktunya untuk mengupas kasus ini. Sayang, telah tiga tahun lebih berlalu - dan masih pula jalan buntu demi jalan buntu yang ia jumpai. Sampai ketika suatu hari saksi demi saksi penyelidikannya mulai memberikan respond yang serupa dan aneh. Mereka semuanya mengklaim bahwa “mereka melihat malaikat maut” dan segera setelah itu tewas secara mengenaskan. Apakah kematian-kematian ini berkaitan dengan kasus kematian keluarga Max Payne? Bisakah Max Payne menyelesaikan masalah ini dan berdamai dengan kehidupannya?

Game Max Payne memperoleh perhatian banyak orang saat rilisnya karena mengoptimalkan penggunaan bullet time dalam gameplaynya. Maklum saja, saat gamenya dirilis, The Matrix merupakan franchise yang ‘panas’. Sang sutradara, John Moore, tahu benar mengenai hal ini dan berusaha mengoptimalkan adegan-adegan slow motion bullet time dalam film ini. Hasilnya, beberapa adegan aksi yang ada memang terlihat indah dan menakjubkan ketika dipandang. Serasa bermain game - tanpa kelewatan terlihat seperti game (ingat ketika Doom dulu memasuki mode pandangan orang pertama demi ‘menghidupkan’ suasana game tapi akhirnya malah jadi aneh?).

Toh, seindah apapun balutan surealisme artistik Max Payne, tema balas dendam untuk keluarga yang terbunuh sudah merupakan tema yang diangkat puluhan kali. Gladiator dan The Punisher merupakan dua contoh yang mengangkat tema serupa - dan Max Payne tidak berusaha membedakan diri dengan film-film tersebut. Memang skenario cerita yang memasukkan malaikat maut seakan hendak ‘menjebak’ kita berpikir bahwa ini mungkin sebuah film dengan tema okultisme, tetapi ketika twistnya dibuka malahan makin memperjelas kedangkalan film ini. Saya sedikit kecewa dengan penampilan Mark Wahlberg sebagai Max Payne dalam film ini. Saya mengerti dukanya kehilangan keluarganya - tetapi pembawaan Wahlberg rasanya terlalu over sampai-sampai di layar Max Payne sudah seakan robot tanpa perasaan. Mila Kunis dan Olga Kurylenko yang seharusnya hadir sebagai penyedap mata juga terlalu minim kehadirannya di layar (give us more Olga!)
Walhasil, Max Payne adalah film dengan kualitas yang standar. Jalan ceritanya berusaha setia dengan gamenya sementara aksi laganya seru tapi terlupakan.
